Mariachi "Cevallos
de North High School"
DENVER- Mariachi Cevallos
de North High School is the first mariachi class ever
offered in a Denver Public High School. The students
in this mariachi group began playing instruments
for the first time in their lives this past January 2004.
With the great help of Mariachi Vasquez, Mariachi
Cevallos de North High School will have their debut
performance in the Celebrate Culture 2004 Parade on
Saturday May 1 in Denver's Civic Center. The
parade starts at 10:30 AM and will be televised on
WB Channel 2 starting at 11:00 AM Mariachi Cevallos del North High School will also be
performing a free concert on Tuesday May 4, 2004 at 7:30
PM in the North High School Auditorium. North High School
is located at Speer and Federal Blvds.
Mariachi Cevallos
will also be performing a selection with their instructors "Mariachi Vasquez" who will also make
an appearance on that date.
Director
of Mariachi Vasquez, Raul A. Vasquez Jr. stated
that the initiation of these types of programs will
lower Denver's Hispanic dropout rate, by providing them
with a program that is culturally connected to them. "I
have personally witnessed how greatly the community
benefits from Mariachi programs such as these, observing
the tremendous impact that those programs had on the
cities of the Southwest region.
Their Hispanic communities benefited
greatly, due to that the majority of the children who
participated in these programs grew up to be doctors,
lawyers, entrepreneurs, strong and vibrant community
leaders and some of the world's best Mariachis.
If we can change the course of one child's life,
we would have accomplished more then we have ever
hoped for. We hope that you will join us in supporting
and applauding the efforts of these students. For
